Did you know that over twenty-five percent of the student population at Monta Loma are military children? Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View has housing facilities on and off base which are zoned to send children to Monta Loma. Moffett hosts families from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, NASA, as well as many others. Each family has a unique reason why they are living in the Bay Area. Most families only stay one to three years at Moffett.
With such a large population of military kids on campus, it makes sense to have a “Military Liaison” position on our PTA. Our current Military Liaison, Jennifer Avalos, has lived in the Bay Area for just over 4 years years. She is an Army Veteran living on Moffett Field, and her husband is an active duty Marine. She has a second grader at Monta Loma. Jennifer would like to be a voice for military kids and their families. “Military kids have to adapt to an environment that is always changing. They are walking into new schools, where there are new faces, and are always having to constantly change. It is scary for them. Their families are also having to do the same. We can be that support for them. They give up so much to support their service members, and we can be that support for them.”
Jennifer is an excellent resource if you’ve just moved to the area and need advice on resources or information about the area. The Moffett community has a Facebook page to connect and share things – send her a message at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are a military family and live at Moffett Field.
